Ductless heating and cooling, and what the 60 percent means
A mini split is a heat pump with an outdoor unit connected by refrigerant lines to one or more indoor units on the wall or ceiling. ENERGY STAR says no duct work is needed, and that certified models use up to 60% less energy than standard home electric radiators. That comparison is with electric resistance heaters, so if a gas furnace heats the house today, the figure says nothing about what you would save.
ENERGY STAR also says a mini split can cost more up front and that the difference is paid back over time through lower energy bills, without a payback figure. Treat any payback number a salesperson quotes as theirs to document.
Mini-split installation costs in Michigan: the evidence so far
Our estimate for this job in Michigan is $2,100 to $15,800 per installed system. It is a model, not a quote, built from national published cost ranges and adjusted by Michigan's wage ratio to the US (1.00), with a typical permit fee added for the work.
Published prices from Michigan heating and cooling companies are not in this table yet. We are collecting them from the companies' own sites, and once there are enough the table will show the number of companies and the date of each price. The heat pump installation cost guide covers what drives a quote.
| Item | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated range, not a quote | $2,100 to $15,800 per installed system | Built from 2 national published ranges, adjusted by the Michigan HVAC technician wage ratio (1.00) plus a typical permit fee ($105). |
| HVAC mechanic and installer wage, Michigan mean | $31.01 an hour | What Michigan heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers are paid (BLS, May 2025), not what you are charged. |
| Same occupation, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn mean | $32.06 an hour | Wage, not a price (BLS, May 2025). |
| Sterling Heights mechanical permit, A/C system 5 ton or less | $57 plus $55 application | 2026-2027 form; the city decides which row applies to your equipment. |
| State mechanical permit, split air conditioning system | $30 plus $75 application | Only where LARA enforces the code. |
| DTE ductless rebate | $700 or $1,000 | Must replace electric heating; funds limited; read Oct 19, 2026. |
| Consumers Energy mini-split rebate | $350 | Replaces primary electric heat; installs in 2026. |
How we estimate costs: the figures here are estimates, not quotes, built from BLS wages, published city permit fees and federal energy-cost evidence. We are collecting the prices Michigan heating and cooling companies publish; we have not yet collected quotes from them, and we will say how many and from when once we do. Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (2 sources), adjusted by Michigan's HVAC technician wage ratio to the US (1.00, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. We have too few Michigan company prices yet to show a range. Full method. Prices as of Oct 19, 2026.
One zone or several: how the choice works
A single-zone system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor unit and heats or cools one room or open area. A multi-zone system connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit, so each room can be set separately. More zones means more indoor units, more line runs and more holes through walls, which is where a quote grows.
For heat in winter, ask the company for the rated heating output of the exact model at the cold end of your area, and ask what keeps the rest of the house warm. Detroit Metro airport averages about 6,067 heating degree days a year and Grand Rapids about 6,408, per NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. See the heat pump page for the cold-weather questions that apply to every heat pump.
DTE and Consumers rebates for ductless, as of October 19, 2026
DTE's page lists two ductless tiers: $1,000 for units above 31.5 SEER2 with an HSPF2 of 10, and $700 for 17 to 31.5 SEER2 with an HSPF2 of 8. The unit must replace electric heating, the home must be a single-family house, and the page carries a Limited Funds Available banner with first come, first served payment. Consumers Energy lists $350 for a mini split at 17 SEER2 and 8 HSPF2 or better that replaces primary electric heat, for installs from January 1 to December 31, 2026, with amounts that can change without notice.
Both programs reward replacing electric heat, so a house heated by gas may not qualify for either. The rebate finder and the DTE and Consumers rebate guide walk through it. The IRS says the federal 25C credit ended for installs after December 31, 2025.
When a heating problem cannot wait
- The house has no heat in freezing weather.
- You smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding.
- You are comparing quotes for a room with no ducts.
- One indoor unit is noisy but still heating.
Questions to settle before you request quotes
- Find out whether electric or gas heats the house now, since both rebates require replacing electric heat.
- Decide which rooms need heat and which only cooling.
- Ask each company for the exact model and its rated heating output at low temperatures.
- Ask who pulls the mechanical permit and who answers for the electrical work.
Mini split installation permit questions in Michigan
LARA says mechanical work cannot start until a permit is issued, except for replacement of minor parts, and a mini split is not on its exemption list, which covers portable equipment under 30,000 Btu/hr and window air conditioners of not more than 1.5 hp. That is our interpretation of the list; LARA can confirm. Whether the electrical wiring to the outdoor unit needs a separate permit is a question for your city's building department; we have not sourced an answer, and Westland's mechanical form has its own line for a reconnect electrical inspection.
Mechanical work needs a mechanical contractor's license under Article 8 of 2016 PA 407, and the license holder pulls the permit. Check the license number on LARA's lookup. An owner-occupant of a single-family home may do the work with a permit and an inspection; installing refrigerant lines also needs someone with an EPA Section 608 credential. See the mechanical permit guide. EPA's global warming potential limit of 700 applies to mini-splits made from January 1, 2025.
Ask for the license number and check it with your state's licensing board before any work starts. Our state pages link the lookup.

A tool for this job
Rebate and tax-credit finder
Pick your utility, your equipment and your household, and the finder shows each program's status with the date we checked it, October 19, 2026. Federal credits 25C and 25D ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS, even though ENERGY STAR's heat pump page still advertises one. It prints no amount without its program, tier and date.
Open the toolQuestions people ask
Do you need a permit to install a mini split in Michigan?
Yes for the mechanical work, going by LARA's exemption list; confirm with LARA. Ask your city whether the electrical wiring is permitted separately.
How much does mini split installation cost in Michigan?
We have not collected Michigan quotes, so the first row of the cost table is a statewide estimate, a model and not a quote. Ask for the number of indoor units, line length and the permit in writing.
What rebates cover a mini split in Michigan?
DTE pays $700 or $1,000 and Consumers Energy pays $350, both for replacing electric heat. Funds are limited, and amounts can change.
Is a mini split cheaper to run than a gas furnace?
We cannot say; ENERGY STAR's 60 percent figure compares it with electric radiators. A comparison with gas depends on your rates and your house, and we found no Michigan figure.
Do I need ducts for a mini split?
No, ENERGY STAR says mini splits need no duct work. The indoor units connect to the outdoor unit by refrigerant lines.
