Sterling Heights particulars

About 6,067 heating degree days a year (base 65 F) is the figure we use for Sterling Heights, from the Detroit Metro airport normals, which are the nearest station that has NOAA normals, not one in the city. Consumers Energy is the only natural-gas utility whose territory covers Sterling Heights, and DTE Electric is the only electric utility. A gas furnace replacement therefore points to Consumers Energy's 2026 chart (installs January 1 to December 31, 2026; funds limited, first come first served), while DTE's central AC and heat pump rebates are for its electric customers.

No city-run rebate turned up for Sterling Heights. The Office of Building at 40555 Utica Road, 586-446-2489, takes mechanical permits through an online portal or by mail. Its 2026-2027 form lists an application fee of $55, gas or oil equipment up to 75,000 BTU at $57, and 75,001 to 500,000 BTU at $64, with AC systems of five tons or less at $57. Whether the $75 alteration line or the equipment lines apply to a replacement is the city's call, so ask when you apply.

About 57.9 percent of homes predate 1980, and older homes more often have older ductwork. Fraser, Troy and Warren are close, and each office sets its own rules. If the old thermostat is the question, see our thermostat page.

AC repair in Sterling Heights: what to know

Sterling Heights cools under about 847 cooling degree days a year (base 65 F), taken from the Detroit Metro airport normals as the closest NOAA station in our set. DTE Electric is the only electric utility whose territory covers the city. Its rebate page for central AC steps from $100 at 15.2 SEER2 to $300 at 18 SEER2 or higher, limited to electric customers and marked first come first served. Heat pump rebates there apply only when the new heat pump replaces electric heat.

The city's 2026-2027 mechanical form lists $57 for an A/C system of five tons or less and $40 for an A/C reconnect, after a $55 non-refundable application fee. Online or mailed, the Office of Building handles it. A tune-up visit needs none of this. DTE's page also lists a $75 rebate for an AC diagnostic tune-up, so ask the contractor whether the visit qualifies.

Permits for ac repair in Sterling Heights

LARA's rule says mechanical work cannot start without a permit, except for replacement of minor parts, and its exemption list names window-type air conditioners of not more than 1.5 hp.

When an AC problem cannot wait

Call right away
  • A heat advisory is in effect, the air conditioner is not cooling, and someone in the house is very young, elderly or medically vulnerable to heat.
  • Water is leaking from the unit toward a ceiling, a light fixture or the electrical panel.
  • The breaker trips again right after you reset it, or you smell burning near the equipment.
Can usually wait
  • The system cools, but more slowly than last summer.

Checks to run before you call

Try this first: if the indoor coil is iced, switch the unit off at the thermostat and restart it only after the ice has melted.

  1. Set the thermostat to cool, a few degrees below room temperature.
  2. Change or clean the filter; ENERGY STAR advises doing it monthly.
  3. Check the breaker for the indoor and outdoor units, and reset a tripped one once only.
  4. Look for water around the indoor unit, which points at the condensate drain.
  5. Do not add refrigerant or open the sealed lines. If the breaker trips again, stop and call.

How we estimate costs: the figures here are estimates, not quotes, built from BLS wages, published city permit fees and federal energy-cost evidence. We are collecting the prices Michigan heating and cooling companies publish; we have not yet collected quotes from them, and we will say how many and from when once we do. Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (1 source), adjusted by Michigan's HVAC technician wage ratio to the US (1.00, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. We have too few Michigan company prices yet to show a range. Full method.

Questions about ac repair

How often should an air conditioning unit be serviced?

ENERGY STAR recommends annual pre-season check-ups by a contractor, cooling in spring and heating in fall, with filters changed or cleaned monthly. It is advice, and no Michigan rule requires it.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The filter, the thermostat setting, the breaker and water near the indoor unit are the first checks. If those look normal, stop there: refrigerant work can only be done by a certified technician, and we cannot diagnose from here.

How much does AC repair cost in Michigan?

We have not collected Michigan quotes, so the first row of the table is a statewide estimate, a model and not a quote. The wage row shows what technicians are paid, not what you are charged. Ask for the diagnostic fee and repair price in writing first.
