Warren particulars

Two utilities share Warren's heating bills. DTE Electric is the only electric utility whose territory covers the city, while gas is predominantly Consumers Energy by our sample of service points, with a sliver of DTE Gas, so addresses near a boundary need checking. A gas furnace buyer therefore looks at Consumers Energy's 2026 rebate chart (installs January 1 to December 31, 2026, amounts can change without notice), and an electric customer looks at DTE's heat pump pages.

For degree days we use the Detroit Metro airport normals as the nearest station we read, our choice and not NOAA's: about 6,067 heating degree days a year (base 65 F). Warren's housing is old, with 83.0 percent of homes built before 1980, and older houses tend to carry older furnaces and ductwork. Mechanical permits come from the Division of Buildings and Safety Engineering, One City Square, Suite 305, 586-574-4504.

It has a separate mechanical application form and a BS&A Online block, though the page does not say mechanical permits specifically can be filed there. A 2023 version of the form lists $80 for a residential furnace, split AC, heat pump or boiler; that is medium confidence because the form is three years old. Warren also licenses rentals for two years with a biennial inspection. Madison Heights and Eastpointe border the city, and the boiler repair page covers hot-water heat.

Emergency HVAC in Warren: what to know

Consumers Energy says that if you smell natural gas you should leave right away, avoid every electric device including a cell phone until you are outside, and call 911 first and then the company at 800-477-5050. For a carbon monoxide alarm, the Consumer Product Safety Commission's advice is to get out to fresh air and call 911. Warren's gas is predominantly Consumers by our sample of service points, with a small DTE Gas share along the city's edges.

Warren licenses rentals for two years with a biennial inspection, and a sale of the property ends the license. Shutoffs are a separate subject, covered in our winter utility shutoff guide. The city's Division of Buildings and Safety Engineering handles mechanical permits at 586-574-4504 once an emergency replacement is chosen.

Permits for emergency hvac in Warren

LARA's permit rule excepts replacement of minor parts, so an emergency part swap generally needs none.

What counts as an emergency

Call right away
  • You smell gas: leave, call 911 and your gas utility from outside.
  • A carbon monoxide alarm sounds or several people feel flu-like without a fever.
Can usually wait
  • No heat but the house is not yet cold, with no smell and no alarm: check the thermostat and filter, then book a visit.
  • A noisy furnace that still heats.

Checks while you wait

Try this first: tell everyone in the house at once and go outside together, then make the calls from the yard or the street.

  1. Set the thermostat to heat, above the room temperature, with fresh batteries if it takes them.
  2. Change or clean the filter; ENERGY STAR says monthly.
  3. Note any light pattern or code on the furnace and stop; do not remove panels or relight after any gas smell.

How we estimate costs: the figures here are estimates, not quotes, built from BLS wages, published city permit fees and federal energy-cost evidence. We are collecting the prices Michigan heating and cooling companies publish; we have not yet collected quotes from them, and we will say how many and from when once we do. Estimated range. Built from national published ranges (1 source), adjusted by Michigan's HVAC technician wage ratio to the US (1.00, BLS May 2025), plus the local permit fee where the city publishes one. Not a quote. We have too few Michigan company prices yet to show a range. Full method.

Questions about emergency hvac

What counts as an emergency HVAC repair?

Those go to 911 and your gas utility first. A furnace that has stopped in freezing weather is urgent but is a call to a heating company once you are sure there is no smell and no alarm.

What should I do if I smell gas near my furnace?

DTE and Consumers Energy both say 911 first. Do not look for the source or use switches, appliances or phones inside, and stay out until responders or the utility say it is safe.

Can I cancel a repair contract signed during an emergency?

Michigan law lets a buyer cancel a home solicitation sale until midnight of the third business day, but not when you request the work without delay because of an emergency and the conditions are met. It covers sales solicited at your home, which is our reading of the statute.
